Design Manager (High Voltage)
Location: Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle (with travel to clients and project sites as required)
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering primary and secondary design, SCADA, distribution design, testing and commissioning, and substation maintenance for network businesses, generators and renewable energy developers across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. We’re not a division of a large multidisciplinary consultancy. HV is all we do, and that focus means our people take on real technical and leadership responsibility earlier than they would in a larger organisation.
We’re looking for a Design Manager to lead our high voltage design team, coordinating primary, secondary, SCADA and distribution design delivery across substation, transmission and renewable energy connection projects. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you’ll own design quality, programme and resourcing, and work alongside our project managers and clients to deliver coordinated design packages.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading Megavar’s HV design team to deliver coordinated primary, secondary (protection and control), SCADA and distribution design packages.
- Planning and resourcing design scopes, and working with project managers to deliver them on time and within budget.
- Overseeing design from concept through detailed design to issued-for-construction documentation, including design review, checking and verification.
- Owning design quality: design standards, review processes and continuous improvement of design practice.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineers, designers and drafters.
- Engaging with clients and network operators on design requirements, interfaces and approvals.
- Contributing technical input and design estimates to proposals.
What We’re Looking For
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical or power engineering.
- At least 5 years’ experience in high voltage infrastructure design: substations, transmission or distribution.
- Demonstrated experience leading design teams and managing design scopes on HV projects.
- Sound knowledge of Australian standards and network business design requirements.
- Clear communication with clients, project managers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Attention to detail and the discipline to deliver to programme.
- Chartered status (CPEng) would be an advantage.
Why Megavar
- Real influence over how Megavar’s design practice grows, with direct access to the leadership team rather than layers of management.
- A genuinely varied caseload: design across transmission, distribution, substation and renewables projects for clients including ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind.
- Structured support toward Chartered Engineer / CPEng status, for you and the engineers you lead.
- Flexible working arrangements, based in whichever of our Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle offices suits you, as part of a close-knit team across five offices.
- Relocation assistance available for the right candidate moving interstate.
- An attractive salary package benchmarked to your experience.
