All earth testing equipment is supplied calibrated and complete with test leads, current injection cables, and accessories appropriate for your testing scope. Flexible hire periods and Australia-wide delivery are available.

Why Hire Earth Test Equipment from Megavar?

Earth grid testing is one of Megavar’s core competencies. Our engineers commission and test substation earthing systems for transmission and distribution network owners across Australia, so we know what works in the field. That includes managing several hundred metres of current injection lead at remote sites, and reading results that confirm compliance with ENA EG-1, AS/NZS 3000, and individual NSP standards. When you hire from us, that practical expertise comes with the equipment.

All earth testing kits are supplied calibrated, with appropriate test leads and current injection cabling sized to your earth grid dimensions. Where the test setup is complex or you want a second opinion on results, our engineers can support remotely or on site. We dispatch from offices in Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide, and Newcastle with delivery Australia-wide.

Calibration

All Megavar test equipment is maintained under a documented calibration programme. Instruments are calibrated either by external calibration laboratories or in-house against reference standards that are themselves laboratory-calibrated, with measurement traceable to Australian national measurement standards held by the National Measurement Institute. A current calibration certificate is available on request. If your project requires a specific calibration interval, test standard, or documentation for a client submission, tell us at enquiry on 1300 730 499 and we will confirm what applies before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions
for Earth Test Equipment

What is earth grid impedance testing and when is it required?
Earth grid impedance testing measures the resistance of a substation’s earthing system to remote earth. It is required during commissioning of new substations, after earth grid extensions or modifications, and periodically to verify ongoing compliance with safety standards. Low earth grid impedance is essential to ensure fault currents are safely dissipated and that touch and step voltages remain within safe limits for personnel.
Step voltage is the potential difference between two points on the ground surface one metre apart (the distance of a normal step). Touch voltage is the potential difference between an earthed structure and a point on the ground one metre away. Both must remain below defined safety limits during an earth fault to protect personnel. Megavar’s CPC 100 + CP CU1 system measures actual step and touch voltages across the substation footprint during earth grid commissioning.
The primary reference for earthing system design and testing in Australia is ENA EG-1 (Power System Earthing Guide), which replaced the former EG-0. AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) also contains earthing requirements for general electrical installations. Network owners such as ElectraNet and TasNetworks have additional site-specific earthing standards and testing requirements that we are familiar with.
Yes. Megavar provides full earth grid testing services including earth grid impedance measurement, step and touch voltage surveys, soil resistivity surveys, and earth grid design review. Our engineers are experienced in testing earth grids on transmission, distribution, and industrial sites across Australia.
Test lead lengths depend on the size of the earth grid being tested. As a general guide, the current injection electrode should be placed at a distance of at least 5 times the diagonal dimension of the earth grid from the grid perimeter. For large transmission substation earth grids, this can mean current injection leads of several hundred metres or more. Megavar supplies appropriate lead lengths based on your earth grid dimensions.
