Senior Substation Design Engineer (Primary)
Location: Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle (with project travel across Australia)
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering primary and secondary design, SCADA, testing and commissioning, and substation maintenance for network businesses, generators and renewable energy developers across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. We're not a division of a large multidisciplinary consultancy. HV is all we do, and that focus means our people take on real design responsibility earlier than they would in a larger organisation.
We're looking for a Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead primary design on transmission and distribution substation and renewable energy connection projects, from concept to detailed design, and to manage mid-sized design projects independently.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading HV substation primary design from concept through to detailed design.
- Producing and reviewing single line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment and materials lists, electrical clearance checks and short circuit force calculations.
- Preparing and reviewing design reports and power system calculations.
- Leading design and safety in design workshops with clients and stakeholders.
- Managing mid-sized design projects, or packages within larger projects, independently.
- Site visits and assessment surveys as projects require.
- Preparing proposals and design budget estimates.
- Working directly with our protection, SCADA and commissioning engineers, and with clients and suppliers across Australia.
What We're Looking For
- A bachelor's degree in electrical or power engineering.
- At least 5 years' experience in substation primary design, preferably in a consulting environment.
- Knowledge of Australian transmission and distribution standards and codes, and design experience with Australian network businesses.
- Site experience on substation projects through construction and commissioning.
- AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience.
- Experience with, or the ability to learn independently, CDEGS, PTW, ETAP and CYMCAP.
- Demonstrated leadership: influencing, motivating and delegating within project teams.
- Chartered status (CPEng) would be an advantage.
Why Megavar
- Real design responsibility and direct client contact, without the layers of a large multidisciplinary firm.
- A genuinely varied caseload: primary design across transmission, distribution and renewables projects for clients including ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind.
- Structured support toward Chartered Engineer / CPEng status.
- Flexible working arrangements, based in whichever of our Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle offices suits you, as part of a close-knit team across five offices.
- Relocation assistance available for the right candidate moving interstate.
- An attractive salary package benchmarked to your experience, with genuine opportunities for progression.
