Calibration

All Megavar test equipment is maintained under a documented calibration programme. Instruments are calibrated either by external calibration laboratories or in-house against reference standards that are themselves laboratory-calibrated, with measurement traceable to Australian national measurement standards held by the National Measurement Institute. A current calibration certificate is available on request. What tests should be performed on a power transformer during commissioning?
A standard power transformer commissioning test program typically includes: insulation resistance (megger), winding resistance, turns ratio across all tap positions, vector group verification, tan delta and capacitance of bushings, CT excitation and ratio testing, oil sample analysis, and functional testing of the on-load tap changer. Megavar can supply the equipment for all of these tests and advise on the appropriate test sequence.
Tan delta (dissipation factor) testing measures the loss angle of insulation, which indicates its condition. Increasing tan delta values suggest insulation degradation from moisture ingress, contamination, or ageing. It is one of the most effective diagnostic tests for power transformer bushings, cables, and surge arresters, providing early warning of insulation problems before they lead to failure.
The Omicron CT Analyser can perform ratio, excitation, polarity, and burden testing without primary injection, making it faster and safer for these specific tests. However, primary injection testing using the CPC 100 and CP CU1 is still required to verify the complete measurement chain from CT through wiring to the protection relay. We recommend both approaches as complementary tests during commissioning.
Operators should be qualified electricians or engineers with training in the specific test equipment and procedures. For high-voltage tests such as tan delta measurement, operators must be authorised to work on or near high-voltage equipment.
